HOP is focusing on legal action to address planned obsolescence. The association is both lodging complaints against planned obsolescence, which is a criminal offence under French legislation, and supporting policies that push brands and consumers to embrace more sustainable practices.
Three instruments championed by HOP have been implemented in France. The instruments are reducing waste resulting from planned obsolescence and impact on consumer purchasing power.
How to stop
planned obsolescence
In France, planned obsolescence is a criminal offence since 2015. In accordance with the relevant law and many other legal provisions, HOP has filed four complaints against brands.
Repairability index
When purchasing a product, consumers are given information on its repairability, scored from 0 to 10, by the repairability index.
Durability index
The durability index is an instrument that helps consumers choose the most reliable and repairable product when buying from a brick-and-mortar or online shop. It imposes stricter requirements than the repairability index.
Repair bonus
The repair bonus is a French aid scheme that helps people repair their goods at a lower cost. The discount is directly applied to the repair bill. How does it work and how is it funded?
